Color on the counter for under $1,000: a Smeg set in one color, and the colorful pieces that cost less
A colorful kitchen can start on the counter, with a toaster, a kettle and a mixer in one color. Here's the Smeg set we can add up for under $1,000, and the colorful pieces in the lowest price band on our pages.
A colorful kitchen doesn't have to start with a colored fridge or range. It can start with the toaster, the kettle and the mixer, because they sit out on the counter all day and they're the first things anyone notices. And they cost far less than a range, so they're the way into color on a smaller budget.
The prices in this guide come from our own store and from Abt Electronics. Only Fellow's Stagg EKG Pro kettle is sold by us, and the Smeg and Café prices are Abt's from late September 2026. But most of the other pieces are sold on Amazon, where we don't track the price, so for those we show the price band from our own pages, from $ to $$$$ within each category, and the live price is on the seller's page.

The rule that makes a small budget look colorful: one color and one neutral
The Essential Guide's rule for a colorful kitchen is one color, one neutral, and not a third thing in a third color. So a pastel green toaster, a red kettle and a blue mixer don't make a colorful kitchen, but three pieces in one color do. And if you're not sure which color, the Essential Guide's advice is cream, because cream is warmer than white, goes with every countertop and is the color Smeg never discontinues.
A colored fridge on the way changes the order, though. So choose the fridge color first, because the Essential Guide warns that a kettle chosen first can leave you a year looking for a fridge to match it. But a small piece is also a cheaper way to test a color, since a Smeg kettle shows you what a Smeg fridge in the same color will do in your own light, with a return window.
Smeg in one color for under $1,000, from Abt Electronics
Smeg makes its toaster, kettle, hand mixer and citrus juicer in many of the same colors, and Abt Electronics sells all four Smeg pieces in cream. So a cream Smeg counter came to $860 at Abt in late September 2026, the one set in this guide we can add up for under $1,000. And pink and red come in under $1,000 too, without the juicer.

Every Smeg piece here has a one-year warranty from Smeg USA, on parts and labor. And the kettle switches off at boiling with no temperature settings, except the red KLF04, while the citrus juicer presses oranges, lemons and grapefruit only. But Smeg's stand mixer alone was $550 at Abt in late September 2026, on pre-order in pink, pastel blue and white, so a Smeg counter with the stand mixer goes past $1,000.
Owners love how the Smeg pieces look on the counter. But the toaster's complaints are about the toast.

KitchenAid in Empire Red: a toaster and kettle in the lowest price band
KitchenAid's toaster and kettle both sit in the lowest price band on our toaster and kettle pages, in Empire Red, the red of KitchenAid's stand mixer. And the toaster has a metal body and a five-year limited warranty, which is long for a toaster. Then the kettle holds 1.25 liters in a stainless steel body, with a one-year full warranty.

Haden in turquoise: the British retro pair in the lowest price band
Haden's Heritage toaster and kettle sit in the lowest price band on our pages too, in the same turquoise. And the toaster centers the bread so both sides toast evenly, while the kettle holds 1.7 liters and switches off at boiling and if it boils dry. But Haden's own website sells UK models that won't work in a US kitchen, so the Haden pieces we link on Amazon are the US 120-volt versions. And we couldn't find Haden's US warranty terms, so check them on the Amazon listing.

Stand mixers: the biggest piece on the counter, by price band
A stand mixer is the biggest piece on the counter. And KitchenAid's Artisan and Artisan Mini and Cuisinart's Precision Master all sit in the second of four price bands on our stand mixer page, while Smeg's mixer sits one band higher.
The Artisan Mini has a 3.5-quart bowl and comes in Empire Red, to match the KitchenAid toaster and kettle, with a one-year limited warranty. And Cuisinart's Precision Master has the longest warranty of the four mixers, three years limited, in frosted blue, agave green and dove gray. But Cuisinart has marked all three of those colors discontinued on its own site.

Cookware and dishes in the kitchen's one color
GreenPan's Rio frying pans and Fiesta's place setting are the two pieces in the lowest price band on our cookware page, and Our Place's Always Pan sits one band higher. And GreenPan's Rio set is two ceramic nonstick frying pans, in turquoise, pink or blue, but only the pink and blue Rio Advanced pans work on induction. Then Fiesta's place setting is a dinner plate, a salad plate, a bowl and a mug, made in West Virginia, with a five-year warranty on chips. And the Always Pan is a 10.5-inch pan with a steamer basket and a three-year limited warranty.

Coffee in color, from the lowest price band
Bialetti's Moka Express and Nespresso's Vertuo Pop+ are the two coffee makers in the lowest price band on our coffee page. And the Moka Express is a stovetop pot that needs no power, pods or filters, with a two-year warranty that leaves out the gaskets and handles. Then the Vertuo Pop+ is a pod machine in aqua mint, pistachio, lilac, spicy red and coconut white, which brews only Nespresso's Vertuo capsules.

- Price: check the live price on the seller's page, because Abt's prices here are from late September 2026 and we don't track Amazon's.
- Seller: check who sells each piece, because one Smeg color can come from Abt and another from Amazon, and Abt may charge the return shipping.
- Volts: buy the US 120-volt version, because Haden's own website sells UK models and Amazon mixes US and European listings of Smeg's hand mixer.
