The Le Creuset Dutch oven: made in France, in the Flame orange Le Creuset started with in 1925

The Le Creuset 5.5-quart round Dutch oven is enameled cast iron, made in France, with a limited lifetime warranty from Le Creuset. And Flame, the orange of the first Le Creuset pot in 1925, is still a color you can buy.

The Le Creuset Dutch oven is a pot many people want for years before buying, and the owners' reviews say so. One owner waited 20 years, and another is still cooking in a Le Creuset that was a gift more than 20 years ago. So part of what you're buying is a pot you expect to keep, and part of it is the color.

Le Creuset's colors have a long history too. Its first color, in 1925, was Flame, an orange taken from the glow of molten cast iron. And Flame is still on the pot today, more than a hundred years later, beside the reds, blues and creams that came after it.

Is the Le Creuset Dutch oven for you
A good fit if

You cook soups, stews, braises or bread for a family, and you'd like a pot that looks good left out on the stove.

Look elsewhere if

Lifting a heavy pot is hard for you, or you'd rather spend much less on one pot. Less expensive enameled cast iron pots cook much the same.

Warranty

A limited lifetime warranty from Le Creuset, against defects in material and workmanship, for normal household use.

What the Le Creuset Dutch oven does

The Le Creuset 5.5-quart Dutch oven is cast iron coated in enamel, inside and out. So it heats evenly and holds the heat for a long time, which is what owners praise first, for searing, braising, soups and bread. And it moves from the stovetop into the oven and back, so one pot can brown the meat and then braise it.

The Le Creuset Dutch oven's inside is a pale, sand-colored enamel, so you can see the food browning as it cooks. That pale enamel is also why owners say it cleans so easily, often after a short soak. And Le Creuset makes the handles larger on its Signature pots, so they're easier to hold in thick oven mitts.

Owners describe the 5.5-quart Le Creuset as the right size for a family of four people, with leftovers. It holds a whole chicken or a pork shoulder, and it's big enough to bake a round loaf of bread.

What the Le Creuset Dutch oven doesn't do

The Le Creuset Dutch oven is heavy, and owners mention the weight again and again. So if lifting a full pot in and out of the oven is hard for you, look at a smaller size, because Le Creuset makes the same pot in several sizes.

The enamel inside the Le Creuset Dutch oven needs some care. Owners say to keep metal spoons and utensils out of the pot and to cook on medium heat or lower, because high heat can stain the pale inside. And one owner says the enamel stains after a while anyway, though it doesn't change the cooking.

The Le Creuset Dutch oven also costs far more than less expensive enameled pots, which cook much the same. But owners who have had both say the Le Creuset is much easier to clean. So it's worth its price if you'll cook in it every week and keep it out where you'll see it, and less so if it will live in a cupboard.

What owners say about the Le Creuset Dutch oven

On Amazon, the Le Creuset Dutch oven scores 4.8 out of 5 from 449 ratings in Cerise, and 4.6 out of 5 in both Flame and Meringue (September 2026). And many owners of the Le Creuset Dutch oven write first about how long they waited to buy the pot, and then about how easily the enamel cleans.

"I've wanted this for 20 years and finally bought one. It's everything I ever dreamed of."

"Not to mention it is beautiful, I keep it on my stovetop even when I’m not cooking!"

"My first is a 7-1/4 quart dutch oven that we received as a gift 20+ years ago and is still going strong"

But the complaints about the Le Creuset Dutch oven are worth reading too, and most are about the weight, the enamel and the seller.

"It's big. It's heavy. Easier to clean if you have a big sink."

"The enamel does stain after a while but it does not affect the cooking"

Amazon customer, verified purchase, August 2020, in Cerise

"This was advertised as new but came incredibly damaged and unusable."

The last owner's pot arrived damaged, and another owner found that the seller on the listing wouldn't take a return at an Amazon drop-off. So check who sells the color you choose before you order.

The Le Creuset Dutch oven's colors, and where to buy each color

We link four colors of the Le Creuset Dutch oven, and all four colors are sold on Amazon. Those four colors are Flame, the orange that deepens to red at the base, Cerise, a deep red, Meringue, a pale cream that one owner calls a whiteish ombré, and Marseille, a bright blue. But Amazon showed only one Marseille pot left when we checked in September, so Marseille isn't shown here.

Who makes the Le Creuset Dutch oven

Le Creuset began in 1925, with a foundry in Fresnoy-le-Grand, in northern France. That's where Le Creuset made its first pot, in Flame, and Le Creuset says its enameled cast iron is still made there. Its name, Le Creuset, is French for "the crucible", the pot that molten iron is poured from. And there's no recall on record for this Dutch oven at the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (checked September 2026).

Other colorful Dutch ovens beside the Le Creuset

Staub, another French maker, builds its cast iron cocotte in deeper colors, with a black enamel inside instead of a pale enamel. So if you'd like a darker red or a dark blue, or if stains on a pale inside would bother you, the Staub cocotte is the one to compare.
